This past weekend we stopped by the PlayStation Theater in Time Square to see Michael Franti and Spearhead play. If you haven’t been to the PlayStation Theater before, it’s a wonderful music venue, with a large dance floor, followed by an elevated platform and stadium seating in the back. It fits for every type of fan, from those who want to see the show up close and dance to those who just want to sit and listen to the music. As we rolled in Nattali Rize had just kicked off her set. If you don’t know the name, Nattali Rize is an up and coming reggae star and doing amazing things for the music genre. She just finished a tour with Tribal Seeds and Raging Fyah, where she put on a strong show at Irving Plaza and here she was playing to a packed house at PlayStation Theater. Nattali and her full band rocked through track of her new album Rebel Frequency setting the vibe for the show and sharing her positive revolutionary message.
Towards the end of her set she grabbed an African hand drum and started wailing. What I loved about this was that she was not just keeping the beat, as I have seen other musicians do, instead she soloed and the crowd went crazy. Ten minutes after her set Nattali was out working her merch booth, shaking hands and taking photos with her fans, proving she is as down to earth as her image and music suggest. If you have a chance make sure you check her out on tour this summer.
